Things to ask your furnace technician!
The cold weather is on its way and it’s important to be sure your heater is working before you actually need to use it. It’s in our best interest to make sure you aren’t left wondering if the company did what they’re supposed to do in order for you to not freeze in the middle of winter.
Here are the five important questions you can ask your furnace technician:
How long has the company been in business?
This is the most important question you should ask. If the company has been working a longer period of time, it’s bound to have gotten the reputation and reviewed by the customers and certified companies such as Better Business Bureau (BBB).
It’s easier to find the reputation of the company and know their strengths and weaknesses. However, if the company is new, it might be working hard to get loyal customers and relies on the good words passed on to others from previous clients.
Do you and your company have the certificates and licenses to work?
Many companies and technicians are bound to have their certificates and licenses shown on their websites or in person. It’s wise to directly ask your technician what type they have. Here are the most common licenses:
State or local licensing
NATE Certification
HVAC Excellence Certification
Can you walk me through the inspection?
We want you to understand what exactly is going on during the process. When you ask this question, you can see whether this technician is delivering their professional customer service and it gives an opportunity for you if you want to request their service from now on.
What is the furnace’s condition and when do you expect for the furnace to be replaced?
Most furnaces have a lifespan of 15-30 years depending on the model and the year you got it. It’s important for you to know what’s the current condition and to be prepared when it’s time to get a replacement.
The technician should tell you what the heater maintenance tips in order to prolong the lifespan of your furnace. And if you think it’s time for a replacement here are some of the questions you can ask about replacement services:
What’s the estimated cost for a new installation?
What brand and type is best for a replacement?
Who will make sure the system is working well?
How long are the warranties for labor and materials?
If the technician tells you there are some parts that are needed to replace or repair, it should have warranties. If you know some parts are still under warranty, you might be able to replace them.
Good warranties can give you a replacement years laters after the date of purchase. Before purchasing the warranties, talk to your technician to learn more about what warranties they offer and what they cover and under what conditions.
